Learn to Salmon Fish Short Breaks

There are a variety of ways to learn to fly fish for salmon. Salmon fishing courses are popular, but are always constrained by fixed dates and a set duration, and therefore may not be convenient for you. Most of the courses on offer are aimed at medium sized groups of 6 to 12 anglers, which may also restrict the amount of individual attention that you get.

For these reasons, the majority of our novice guests choose customised ‘Learn to Salmon Fish’ short breaks. We can tailor these breaks for individuals or small groups of family, friends or colleagues, to meet your needs, and subject to availability, to fit your available time.

Our ‘Learn to Salmon Fish’ short breaks are generally based on the private beats of the River Alness and are offered throughout July to October. The instruction is provided by a GAIC-qualified fly fishing instructor, sometimes assisted by a local ghillie depending on the size of the group. For beginners we start with the overhead and roll casts, progressing to the single Spey, but we can also teach the double Spey and snake roll casts, depending on timeframe.

We aim to get you casting effectively with the basic double-handed salmon rod casts on your first day, though of course it will still take time and practice to master these casts.

We have an intimate knowledge of all the Novar beats on the River Alness, and this ensures that your fly will be covering the salmon lies effectively; dramatically improving your chances of success. We can provide you with all the tackle that you will need, take you to the beats, teach you to cast and how to fish for salmon.

For dedicated 'Learn to Salmon Fish' short breaks we recommend you visit for at least 2 days, and preferably 3 or 4 days as this gives us a chance to look at the more advanced casts and provides significantly more opportunity to catch that first salmon.

We have an amazing record for helping guests catch their first salmon, and have assisted 100+ anglers from 7 to 83 years of age to this achievement!
